The Days of August

The days of August. Hot. Waiting for school to start. Getting that freshman ready for the first year of college. Most of the festivals are done. Garden starting to wane just a little. Trying not to run the power bill up too high. Happy summer is almost over. Sad summer is almost over.

Perfect time to line up the next remodeling or repair project. The ones you know you need to do but haven’t gotten around to putting the process in motion.

This summer we have been busy despite all of the doom and gloom out there. We’re redoing bathrooms, remodeling kitchens, putting on additions, replacing windows, building covered porches, putting up gutters and repairing lots of rotten trim. We all know that our houses have had some value adjustments. But they are still our homes and most of us do not plan on moving any time soon. So we are maintaining and improving them and protecting them. So if you have been sitting on the fence wondering if anyone else is investing money in their home-they are.

The fall of the year almost always brings requests from our clients to be finished with projects “by the holidays”. Of course if it is a large project stretching over months folks realize that their house may not be in order this year, but it will be awesome next year. Lots of types of small repairs can be completed within a week or two time frame, but other remodels such as kitchens and bathrooms take a certain amount of time. A bathroom remodel that consists of pulling existing fixtures and replacing with new is certainly faster than one in which walls are moved around. Some materials can take weeks to get in after they are ordered. So-if you are planning a project that you want to have done before the family starts gathering we need to get going now.

We have repaired several homes this year in which the project started off as simple window and door repair but led to major structural issues. If  you walk around your house and you see areas of peeling paint please remember that paint is not just decoration-it is a protective coating. If you look at your exterior trim and you see signs of deterioration please take it seriously. Behind every piece of trim on your home is the framing of your house. Trim is used to cover open areas of your home. That is its purpose. The combination of trim material, caulk and paint is like your skin. Rain hits it, runs off and everything is ok. But if water gets in, all sorts of havoc can occur. It can cause moisture damage and can create a home for termites and other wood eating insects. Even if you are having your house treated for termites they can live in the wet wood and never get to the ground where the poison is. Look at the sides of your door trim at the bottom. Poke on it. Is it soft and mushy? Do the same at your windows? Does it push in? Some of you will do this and your finger will go right into the wood. Squishy is bad. Grabbing a hunk with your finger is real bad. I just wanted to share this with you because we are seeing a lot of cases where it has been let go for too long a period of time. If you find something like this call us and we will come look your whole house over and help you plan a course of action (in other words-fix it).

Enjoy the rest of your summer. Call us. Thanks
