Today's Trend Reflects Changing Housing Market

We work in homes everyday. Inside and outside. We remodel kitchens and bathrooms. Add additions. Build porches and decks. Paint. Fix rotten wood. Lay tile. Install gutters, siding and new shingles on roofs. We create custom built-ins and anything else our clients want. We have been listening to folks since 1985 and producing the projects they need to have done. And seeing trends.
Real trends. Things that are actually being done to homes. Home shows on TV and magazines are always presenting and showcasing new products and new ways to use them. Homeowners like yourself (and us) watch and read and listen and try to condense something out of it all that works for you. And we get to come to your house and build it. This lets us understand the real trends. We try to pass along what we are doing to each new client we go to to see. And we have noticed a new one over the past few months like I would like to pass along.

Before the “housing crisis” that we have been going through, most owners remodeled their homes for one of two reasons. For themselves or for the next owner. They had made the decision that they were going to stay in their home for a long while and were remodeling for themselves. Additions for a growing family, new kitchens to relax in and new bathrooms to spend time in. Or they were sprucing up to sell by painting, installing new flooring and by catching up on the maintenance items they had been putting off. The benefits were not for them other than making the house more presentable which helped sell it. Not large expenditures-just enough to give the house a little shine. Most of the time that was all that was needed. Things have changed.
Don’t get me wrong. Folks are still remodeling for the above reasons but a third major reason has been emerging. It is hybrid that combines the two. It seems that folks are beginning to believe that they will not be selling their house any time soon at a price they think they should get. In addition when it does go on the market it had better have features that place it shoulders above other homes of similar value on the market. The kitchens need to be upgraded as well as the bathrooms. All of the little repairs have to be done as well. And if you are going to do all of that just to make it sell better you might as well do it now so that you can enjoy it for the time you are there. That’s the new trend.

The most popular projects? Bathrooms. Number two? Kitchens? Number three? More space in a variety of ways. Number four? Getting rid of the popcorn ceilings, the stained trim, the paneling, the carpet, the wallpaper, and the old tile. The colors? Earth tones are the new neutral. Off white walls in every room has been replaced with different colors in every room. White trim is still popular but even that is being replaced with a muted white.

So go ahead-remodel for the next owner. They will appreciate it and will pick your home as their new home. But do it for yourself and enjoy it before they move in.
